About

Iain de Ruiter is a tailor and fashion designer based in the Amsterdam.

In 2025, he graduated from the Fashion Design Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, following an earlier training in tailoring, pattern drawing, and design.

His work expands traditional modes of garment making by studying systems of sound, cognition, and visual culture.

“My practice is driven by a fascination with how various art forms build their own vocabularies — how they shape, deconstruct, and push beyond what is known.

My influences are both personal and analytical. I look towards Luigi Russolo for his daring conceptualism, Dick Ket for his amplification of the banal, and M. Revis for his poetic objectivity. In fashion, I find alignment with designers like Juun. J, whose sharp tailoring and exaggerated shapes challenge and celebrate form at once.

At the heart of my process lies the suit: a symbol of cultural legacy and formality, reinterpreted through variation and repetition. Each look I create is part of an ongoing rhythm — echoing musical phrasing through silhouette and detail — while remaining grounded in time-tested tailoring techniques and a commitment to preserving the value of slow, intentional making.”
